Harvested in Greece

Like us, you probably want more equity, more sustainability, and more quality at affordable prices. That’s why we have teamed up with gebana - who enable small scale organic farmers from the South to sell their produce in Western Europe -  to change the rules of the game: they trade differently, you buy differently. This is how we all make it work:

  • gebana only harvest and deliver fruit when it is ripe.
  • The taste is what counts above all; meaningless standards such as size and colour are of no concern.
  • gebana sell in large packages that come directly from the country of origin. This is more efficient, reducing not only waste but also food miles.
  • You, the customer, buy in larger quantities. By receiving large packages directly from the producers you are helping to reduce the carbon footprint of your purchase, with shorter transport routes, lower emissions and less packaging. And you can always share the contents of bulk packages with friends and family.
  • We continue to strive to keep getting better at doing business socially and ecologically and change global trade in favour or farming families, local economies and the environment – it doesn’t stop at organic and fair trade!
  • No preservatives, no wastage, and incredible taste – you won’t look back!

Help support Chrysoula and Christos Stergiou's Greek farm by buying this 13kg box of wonderfully sweet organic oranges harvested in the Peloponnese.

Fruit from the Greek Peloponnese peninsula are famous for their freshness and sweet taste. Our Navelina oranges are seedless and ideal to eat straight from the box or to make into juice. Please note that if there is an April delivery, it will be a late Navel variety called 'Lane Lane', which is just as delicious.

The oranges have been grown naturally without the use of harmful pesticides, so you can safely use their peels (cooked and uncooked) to make jam, for baking, and in other food preparation.

Reviews:

5 Dec-18 Thanks very much; just arrived and taste delicious!

5 Dec-18 The best oranges I have ever had!

9 Dec-18 My oranges are delicious and all in great condition, a real pleasure eating them.

17 Dec-18 Five stars. These are reliably juicy, sweet and delicious — every single one so far — with a firm, easy to peel skin. Almost two weeks in we're half way through and there's not a sign of blemish on any of them, despite our courier being quite rough with the box and our coldest room, at 13C, being above the recommended storage temperature. 13kg of oranges (just over sixty individual fruit) may seem a bit crazy, but the two of us will easily eat them all within their month-long "best before". The price is not far off supermarket organics, so seems to represent very good value for such a short and ethical supply chain.

29 Jan-19 The oranges arrived when you said and they are big, juicy and delicious - much nicer and better value than supermarket ones. They are in good condition, the cardboard crate they came in is ventilated and robust, so far they are keeping well in it.

3 Feb-19 Just wanted to say that these oranges were delicious, and we will be ordering again!

Delivery: Oranges, like all citrus fruit, don’t ripen after being picked. Therefore, we wait until our oranges are perfectly ripe before harvesting them. This means that your fruit might be delivered 1-2 weeks earlier or later than expected. The oranges are transported by land and sea.

Colour: The colour of an orange does not determine its ripeness. Instead, our naturally produced oranges only get their distinctive orange hue when night time temperatures drop to a certain level. It is therefore possible that when your oranges arrive some of them might still be green. This is normal, and does not affect their ripeness or their taste.

Delivery checks: Please check your oranges after receiving them for any signs of pressure or minor damage, and make sure to eat these ones first. If you should discover any signs of mould soon after receiving your oranges make sure to remove the affected fruits quickly, so that the mould does not spread throughout the crate.

Storage: Your oranges should be stored in a cool, dry place, ideally a refrigerator or a cellar at a temperature between 4-6⁰C. Citrus fruits can also be stored on a balcony or terrace, provided that they are kept in a Styrofoam box or covered with a woollen blanket to protect them from frost. If properly stored, our oranges can be kept fresh for up to a month.

About the farmers: The first of Chrysoula and Christos Stergiou’s orange trees were planted on Mount Argos in 1957. To protect the environment and support natural agriculture their farm converted to organic in 1998. The oranges grow naturally without chemical or hormone treatment; when ripe they are handpicked from the tree. Initially, the higher prices meant that there were no buyers for organic products but with gebana farmers are paid fairly, and on time. ‘We would like to thank the gebana customers for buying our Greek produce’.

Suggested recipe:  Mulled orange juice - a child-friendly non-alcoholic version of mulled wine

Cooking time: 10 minutes
Servings: 8 people
Ingredients:
1l of freshly squeezed orange juice
1 stick cinnamon
4 cloves
Instructions: Simmer the orange juice with the cinnamon stick and cloves for about 10 minutes until the flavours have infused. Remove the cinnamon stick and the cloves. Serve warm.

About gebana: Global Farmers' Market is a new partnership with gebana to supply organic produce direct from farmers in poor countries. gebana was founded in Switzerland in 1998 with the aim of linking social and ecological values to economic sustainability. They established supply chains and partner companies were formed in Brazil, Burkina Faso, Tunisia, Turkey, Togo and Benin to make it easier for them to link to local farmers. They enable small scale organic farmers from the South to sell their produce in Western Europe. It hasn’t been an easy ride and one of the ways that has made gebana distinctive has been its willingness to take risks. gebana has high standards for social justice and sustainability. It works with external accreditation but recognises that whilst clear and strict standards are important, their implementation is often laborious, bureaucratic and expensive. They have developed their own organic and fairtrade standards whilst recognising the needs and disadvantages of small-scale farmers.

Until now gebana has only operated in Austria, Switzerland and Germany. Most of their organic farmers produce more than they can sell so we are very excited to become a distributor. They share many of this Shop's core aims, fostering sustainable development across the world whilst protecting the environment for future generations.

Their produce is organically farmed and then shipped via land or sea to limit carbon emissions.
