Owner Rakiyt Zakari designed the bracelets, as a part of the brand's "STRUGGLE STRONG" campaign. Zakari reinterpreted the oppressive symbolism of barbed wire into being a symbol of solidarity and empathy. The bracelets are manufactured in the United States as a part of The Original David's new social initiative, "PRODUCT OF" which is described by Zakari as their effort to "humanize manufacturing". Barbed Wire Bracelet workshops were set up in partnership with PSI an ADHC in New York, and refugee groups from Burundi, Ethiopia, and Nigeria. Participants were taught how to make the bracelets and compensated for their work. For some, the barbed wire bracelets have been their families' only source of income.
