Our Nilgiri Tea comes from the Just Change Tea Producer Company, a co-operative of producers and consumers in India building a community determined to globalize at the grassroots and 'Just Change' the world.' We, the Adivasis of Gudular in the Nilgiris, south India, reclaimed our stolen ancestral lands. To retain our land and escape poverty we planted tea. We supply this to the Parry Agro Tea factory who pay a good price for our leaf tea. To fight market forces and gain greater control we buy back the processed tea and sell it directly to consumers through Just Change'.
The Women's Community Business Network on the Greater Leys housing estate in Oxford has linked up with Just Change - a community trading network which was started by a group of indigenous people in Southern India. WCBN founders Katie and Tanya explain why they set it up, Katie describes her business and how selling Just Change tea fits in. Sambiya in Gudalur introduces us to her home and to the surrounding fields where she grows the tea that both she and Katie enjoy drinking:
